A Decade of Minor League Baseball
The city of Portland, Oregon is known as being a home for the outsiders and those who choose to live life differently from the rest of the United States.
So it’s weird to think of it as a hub for one of Americas traditional pastimes: professional baseball. Yet this sport has a rich history in the Portland Metro Area, dating as far back as 1903. While the teams have ebbed and flowed, the most recent iteration now hails from the Portland suburbs. The Yakima Bears organization relocated from Washington and played their first season as the Hillsboro Hops in 2013. Serving as the High-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Hops are a key stop on any pros journey to the big leagues. The team’s success at developing players has been a significant reason the Diamondbacks have seen a revamped farm system which lead to a world series berth in 2023. Additionally, the organization itself has been a key part of the economic growth of the Portland area in the 2010s.
The 2023 season served as the 10-year anniversary of the organization in Oregon. This is the story of those ten years.
